This beautiful debut feature from Ramata-Toulaye Sy, screened ‘In Competition’ at Cannes last year, was shot on location in northern Senegal with a non-professional cast. Banel and Adama, in love with each other since childhood, live in a primitive drought-stricken village. They have decided to live apart from their families and challenge their old ways, but, when Adama refuses to accept his inherited duty as future chief, the whole community is disrupted.
