The German director Wim Wenders is best known for the classics Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire, both shown by the Society in the 1980s. The latest film in his 50-year career is a charming, engaging portrait of a simple life, initially following the daily routines of Hirayama, a middle-aged cleaner of public toilets in Tokyo. A series of encounters with his young disruptive assistant and Aya, his girlfriend, and friends, leads Hirayama to reconsider his situation. Koji Yakusho, who gives a masterful performance as Hirayama, won the Best Actor award at Cannes last year.
