British director, Jonathan Glazer takes a unique and unsettling view of the Holocaust, loosely based on a Martin Amis’s novel. Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig attempt to build a normal family life in a house and garden beside the camp. Whilst the film does not show graphic images of the horrors of the camp, the sound designers, Johnnie Burn and Tarn Willers, use malevolent audio effects to create a terrifying atmosphere. The team won the Oscar for the Best Sound and the film was awarded the Oscar for Best International Film for the UK.
